Latest Book Version
This is revision 2027.1 of the first edition of the book. Its PDF, EPUB, and DOCX files, the PowerPoint slides, and the companion and solution files in the table below are published together on the release page of the revision, and each new revision of the book gets a release of its own.
Charles River Accounting Dataset
The Charles River Accounting Dataset supports every chapter of the book across Excel, SQL, and Power BI. Visit the Charles River Accounting Dataset website for documentation and additional information. All dataset changes and updates will be posted there.
This edition of the book is verified against dataset release v2027.1, which covers fiscal 2024–2026. Use the files below, which come from that release, so that your results match the chapters.
- Charles River Accounting Dataset (SQLite)
- Charles River Accounting Dataset (Excel)
- Charles River Accounting Dataset (CSV package)
All three formats contain the same Charles River data, so students can move between Excel, SQL, and Power BI without changing datasets.
Supplementary Material
Each chapter’s slides, companion files, and solutions are in the table below. Slides are the PowerPoint deck of the chapter or case; its page also lets you view them in the browser. Companion files are the start files of the tutorials: each holds the work as it stands at the end of the previous tutorial, and a chapter-end file closes the set, so you can begin a tutorial without the one before it or check your own work. Solutions cover the exercises, the comprehensive cases, and the capstone cases, so try the work first. A dash means there is no file of that kind.

For instructors, Instructor-Notes.zip holds a folder of PDF files for each chapter, case, and appendix with exercises. Each folder opens with a teaching note, with a guide to each tutorial or milestone and the answer key of the multiple-choice questions, and has a file for each exercise or requirement with a worked solution, the expected values, common mistakes, and a grading rubric, illustrated with mock screens and diagrams.
Opening a Companion File
The Excel and Power BI files read CharlesRiver.xlsx from the folder C:\CharlesRiver. If your copy is there, a file is ready to refresh. Otherwise, point the file at your copy once, before you refresh it. The Power BI solutions of the capstone cases also read their case’s solution workbook, and Chapter 19’s reads RefundFlags.csv, from the same folder.
In Excel:
- Select Data > Get Data > Data Source Settings.
- Select the CharlesRiver.xlsx source and Change Source, browse to your copy, and select OK.
- Close the dialog and select Data > Refresh All.
The Power BI files are Power BI projects: a .pbip file and two folders with the same name, which hold no data until you refresh them. In Power BI Desktop:
- Copy the .pbip file and its two folders into a folder of your own, and open the .pbip file.
- Select Home > Transform data > Data source settings, select the CharlesRiver.xlsx source and Change Source, browse to your copy, select OK, and close the dialog.
- Select Apply changes if a bar offers it, or Refresh on the Home tab.
- Select File > Save as and save a .pbix file with the name the tutorials use, such as Charles River Reports.pbix.
The new Power Query experience, a preview feature, has no Change Source button, so if you turned it on, turn it off in File > Options and settings > Options > Preview features first.
The Power BI projects open only in Power BI Desktop. If you follow the Power BI chapters in a browser, build your own model from CharlesRiver.xlsx instead, as the appendix on Power BI in the browser shows, and carry it from chapter to chapter.
The SQL scripts need no change of source. Save a script in the folder of your working copy, CharlesRiver_Work.sqlite (Tutorial 9.1), open the copy in DB Browser for SQLite, and open the script from the Execute SQL tab with Open SQL file(s). The Part III case uses the view that Tutorial 11.3 saves in the working copy. If you skipped that tutorial, run Setup_Part3_Views.sql once and select Write Changes.
